Shouting into the Storm Rantings, ramblings, observations and musings from the insipid to the sublime

Turning a Deaf Ear to the ANSWER

Monday, October 20, 2003 :::

This weekend in DC, there is going to be another anti-war rally in DC. And just like all of the ones leading up to the war against Iraq, it is being brought to you by International ANSWER. Cute name for a group, although it really doesn't give you a sense of what they are about. And even though I went to the protest back in January, I will not be at this latest event for the professionally outraged.

And it has nothing to do with the fact that I'll be binging on poker in Atlantic City.

ANSWER and the organizations that put on these events do one thing well. They organize. Socialists are very good at this. They get the permits, the media, they get the word out. What they don't do is stay on message. Their message this time, officially, is "Money for Schools, Not War." Which is all in all a good idea. Except it won't be what is spoken about at the rally. The speakers instead will yell and shout and use every shrill manner of communication to condemn the Bush Administration for...well....everything. For racism, for the environment, for women's issues. There will be plenty of speakers talking about the glory of the struggle of the Palestinians. And, just maybe, they might mention something about education. Maybe, but I wouldn't bet on it.

So, for now, I'm done with these groups and these protests. The message is too diluted. While many in the crowd may be well meaning, those with the microphones are not. And that is not something I am willing to put my name on.
