Poker's Resurgence

On-line Casinos

Now, a quick note - I, Chris Soule, am a poker player. Or at least, I aspire to be. Over the past year and a half, I have basically become the people in these articles. I play about 8-10 hrs a week playing, studying, or discussing poker. I'm part of a group of players, and we play at least once a month. Low limit, no-limit, tourneys, ring games, we'll play 'em all. World Poker Tour? Yup. World Series of Poker marathons on ESPN? Put the clicker down, I'm all over it.

So, with that in mind, let's get something straight - why in God's name are we concerned that poker of all things is going to corrupt our poor, precious children? Poker is a zero-sum game. It is part stats, part psychological. It is no more addicting than any going to the gym, internet porn, or anything else people can get wrapped up in.

If people are really concerned about internet poker, here's a novel idea - legalize it, and tax the living crap out of it. Or, recognize it as a game of skill(like the state of California did a century ago) and let state's regulate poker parlors. This isn't the 40s where the mobs run the gambling business. How much money could the state of Virginia, with it's cash-strapped budget, bring in by taxing poker? I'm guessing enough to help plug some hole.

But, oh no, think of the children!!!
